Q&A with Steve St. Pierre

Graphic designer and art director

My name's Steve St. Pierre. I'm a graphic designer and art director based out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I make a living dolling out logos and other assorted graphic arts to a stable of great clients.

Software / hardware

I owe Adobe my first two children, I think. I mostly work out of Illustrator with a bit of Photoshop and InDesign chucked in when the need arises. Always have a ream of paper beside me, as well. A big stack of white sheets, black pen, ready for whatever needs to get out fast. That's where my projects start. On paper. Then I pound it out on my 27" iMac.

Ideal work environment

I've currently got a small little studio. Just me working away with the odd sandwich break. Music is always playing - lately it's been a lot of Justin Townes Earle and Dawes and cats like that. Keeping it rootsy around the office, you know? But I'm looking to get a shared space with some pals. It'd be nice to have a couple extra sets of eyes on the work and having company around is never a bad thing. Drinking alone is getting old.

Inspiration

The cliched answer is everywhere, but it's true. You need to keep your eyes open. I wish I could say I stay away from the design blogs, but I check 'em every morning and file away ideas and styles and whatnot. I like to look outside the industry, though. You need to. I've got some old encyclopedia's that I cycle through, old books in general. I love old type and how simple everything was. And then if all else fails I just slam my head against the desk until something happens.

Admire most

Tom Sachs, Stephen Powers, Andrew Pommier, Frank Gehry, Maurice Sendak, Dieter Rams, Massimo Vignelli and Aaron Draplin. Look 'em up.
