Q&A with Addison Berry

Director of Education at Lullabot

I'm the Director of Education at Lullabot, an interactive agency that specializes in the open source CMS Drupal. I lead all of our educational services, which is mostly focused on our video tutorial service, Drupalize.Me.

Hardware

I use a 13" Macbook Air. I do have an external monitor in my office, but I only use my desk occasionally. Generally I'll work in my Fat Boy (basically a bean bag chair), on the couch, or on the balcony in nice weather. I have a Nexus 7 which I use mostly for occasional testing, and I just switched from an iPhone 4 to a Moto G for my phone. I do a lot of recording (videos and podcasts) so I have a R?de Podcaster mic. I have bunch of different headsets, but I use my Logitech G930 the most. It's bulky as hell on my little head, but it's Bluetooth, so I can wander around while I'm on calls.

Software

I spend my day in Google Apps and IRC, for which I use Textual. I'm a big fan of nvALT for my daily note-taking, and I use Sublime Text for writing articles and code work. I'm also on calls quite a lot, and since I live in Europe while most of my team is in the US, I tend to use internet tools like Skype and Google Hangouts more than my phone. For video and audio recording I use Screenflow and Audio Hijack respectively. I have Final Cut Pro, but I let our editor handle most of that fun stuff.

Dream setup

I pretty much live in my dream setup. :-) I work from home, and get to make my work space the way I want it. I love the freedom to take advantage of a sunny day and sit outside, or putter around and do laundry, or make a pot of tea whenever I want. I honestly can't even imagine what it would be like to work in an office again.

Inspiration

It might sound corny, but I'd say I'm mostly inspired by my co-workers. The people I work with are wicked smart and just real good, honest people. We hug each other when we get together. They really inspire me to be the best I can—to find ways to push myself to help make the whole company better. Aside from them, the Drupal community and open source ethos is a very strong influence for me. The drive to share and make the world a better place is infectious. I guess at the end of day, surrounding myself with amazing people is my best inspiration.
