Q&A with Rich Roat

Co-founder & co-owner of House Industries

My name is Rich Roat. With Andy Cruz, I am the co-founder and co-owner of House Industries.

I do so many things around here that I can't name one. Someone in Chicago bought three big painted panels we had in our gallery last week. I had to build a custom wood crate, so I bought one of those new Makita lightweight impact drivers. I really liked that. Didn't love it though.

Loving hardware and software is a dangerous emotion because once you like the way something works, it changes. My relationship with my tools is strictly platonic. Except for the bikes I ride back and forth to the studio. I love my bicycles.

Ideal work environment

One surrounded by people who are so good at what they do that they make you want to be better.

Mostly from feeling like I'm not working. And when I'm working on something I love, it doesn't feel like work.

Admire most

I feel like I've had my head in the sand for the past ten years. I don't consume a lot of media and Yorklyn, Delaware isn't what one would call a cultural mecca. So I'd have to say the designer I admire most is the one who sits next to me, Ken Barber.
