Q&A with Mig Reyes

Designer from Chicago working at Basecamp

Hello friends! My name is Mig Reyes, and I’m a designer from Chicago working on brand, marketing, and design at Basecamp.

How did you get started in design?

Graduate high school —> bum around —> admit traditional university life is not your thing —> concede to art school —> fall in love with art school —> try to become working artist.

Creative process

Creative process: take a shower —> have two disparate thoughts seemingly connect in your head —> rush out of shower to write this down —> forget —> stare at blank canvas —> scribble doodles —> mash keys —> get lucky —> ship it.

More seriously, I do things that help make Basecamp a better product, and a better company.

What tools and software do you use for your work?

  • Sharpie Markers
  • Sharpie Pens
  • iA Writer
  • SublimeText (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ruby)
  • Photoshop for resizing selfies

What is your ideal work environment?

Coffee shops. You get the vibe of coworkers without anyone tapping you on the shoulder, and unlimited access to caffeine to boot.

Where are your favorite places for art?

Subways, alleys, walking around the city. Art is free.

Who are the creatives you admire most?
