Q&A with Kate Bingaman-Burt

Professor of graphic design at Portland State University

I am a full time professor of graphic design at Portland State University. I also happily draw for myself and for other people.

Tools

My trusty black pens and piles of tracing paper. My most used digital tools are my scanner, my Macbook Air, photoshop and illustrator. and snacks. Lots of snacks.

Ideal work environment

I think it is the one I am in now. I am sharing a space with four other graphic designers/illustrators and educators. Our walls are filled with books, color and imagery. I work at my grandmother's drawing table and a constant stream of podcasts, music and bad tv shows flow into my ears.

Inspiration

I am inspired by the stories and emotions behind our purchased objects and I make piles of work about the topic of consumption.

Admire most

My favorite creative people are David Byrne, Dolly Parton, Lucille Ball, Steve Marin and Yoko Ono. To name a few. I know these people aren't illustrators, but if we are going down that road...I am going to pick my grandmother Nan Pollard. She was a children's book illustration from the time she was 19 until she lost her central vision when she was 75.
