Q&A with Julia Robbs
My name is Julia Robbs, and I am a freelance photographer based in NYC. Through my photography, I like to tell stories and search for beautiful light.
Software / hardware
I primarily use my Canon 5D Mark 3 for shooting. My most frequently used lenses are the Canon 50mm 1.2, and 35mm 1.4. I edit in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Photo Mechanic. I use a Macbook connected to a monitor, and my wacom tablet.
Ideal work environment
It depends on what I'm doing. If I'm shooting, my ideal work environment is a killer crew to work with, including models, hair stylists, makeup artists, art directors, etc. Or just collaborating with one other person can be a great thing, when all parties are excited to be working on the project. Beautiful lighting is a must. If I'm editing, or doing other office type work, I like for my workspace to be clean and airy. I love to have natural light and good music playing.
Work inspiration
Inspiration for me comes in different ways I suppose. It could be from a movie, or a piece of art I've seen. I'm a very visually inspired person, and like to see how others interpret what they see. I think you just have to be open to new experiences, new things, and inspiration will come.
People you admire most
In terms of modern photographers today, I really look up to Jamie Beck of Ann Street Studios and Anna Wolf. Both have such a strong photographic style, and are females just kicking ass in the photo industry. I always find something new that I love when looking at their work. I admire my husband, Aaron, who is also such a talented creative. I don't get how he comes to some of his amazing ideas.
