Q&A with Dan Blackman

Creative director and designer in Dumbo, NY | The School of Visual Arts

My name is Dan Blackman and I am a creative director and designer. Currently I am working out of Studiomates in Dumbo New York and adjunct teaching at The School of Visual Arts.

Like most designers I use Photoshop, indesign and Illustrator on a daily basis. I also typically use Bridge for workflow, Evernote for keeping my thoughts in order and Freshbooks for my accounting..

11" Macbook air and a thunderbolt display. Lumix GF1. Canon 5D Mark III. Pencil and paper.

Ideal work environment

My ideal work environment is a place thats quiet, beautiful and surrounded by the brightest and best people. A place where I can feed off the amazing work others are creating, get critiqued and talk through problems. Studiomates has been pretty ideal.

Travel, friends, family, alcohol, my students, the internet, books, late nights, smoke breaks. long walks, showering, outdoors, etc etc etc..

Admire most

This has always been a tough question for me to answer because there are so many designers that I admire for their work.

In 2013 however I had the opportunity to work on a few projects for Sagmeister and Walsh. Stefan was hugely inspiring with not only his approach towards creating work but also his handling of clients and presenting work. It made me re-think my approach to running my own studio.
