Q&A with Nate Williams

Illustrator and author

I am an illustrator/author .. I basically make pictures and think of ideas.

How did you get started in illustration, what is your background?

I had always enjoyed making pictures and eventually found out I could do it for a living ...either as an artist, illustrator, design, art director etc ... so I tried all of them.

Where did you study? Would you recommend your path to beginners in design/illustration?

I studied sculpture at the University of Utah ... I think the best way these days is to get educated online and go to meetup and maybe work as an intern.

What is a turning point in your professional career?

When I quit my job as an art director and became an illustrator ... it was a huge risk .. but well worth it.

What is your ideal work environment?

Sitting at a park bench or coffee shop ... studying, thinking of ideas and reading stuff completely unrelated to art/design.

Where are your favorite places in your city or outside?

In Utah .. I love being next to a waterfall in the mountains. In Buenos Aires .. I love walking down the streets and just absorbing all the stimuli.

Who are the designers and illustrators, colleagues in your city/country or outside you admire most?

David Carson ... he made me realize anything is possible and you don't need permission to like what you like.
